       Russian Easter eggs

Icons are windows that give us a glimpse into the sky. The origin of encaustic tempera painting goes back a long way. In the late period of advanced Egyptian civilization, mummies of the dead were embalmed with a portrait painted on their faces to commemorate them. 

The Greeks gave such art maximum beauty without flaw or imperfection, the Romans, on the other hand, rather the uniqueness of even typical banalities. Thus, in the free Christianity of the fifth century, the first attempts were made to paint ("write") images, icons.

These mainly represented Jesus and Mary, the apostles and martyrs. Later also the message of the 12 main feasts of the Eastern Church and the various mysteries of salvation. The images always conformed to the regulations of the church (Encheiridion) and later were also highly venerated in the homes of the faithful.
